Charles (Chuck) Henry Stevens, 84, of Stevensville, MI, died February 10, 2009. He recently resided at the nursing facility, West Woods of Niles, in Niles, MI.
Born January 11, 1925 in Indianapolis, Ind. to Mildred and Enos Stevens, he was a decorated officer in the Army in WWII. He then attended college at UCLA for a short while before transferring to Purdue University where he studied aeronautical engineering for four years. He and Lillian Maxine Buntin, a Purdue graduate who died in 2000, were married in Las Vegas in 1949 and were happily married for 52 years. They had two daughters, Kathleen Jones of Tahlequah, Oklahoma and Christine Stevens of Chicago, IL and Union Pier, MI. Delores Althhauser, his only sibling, resides in Bullhead City, Arizona. He is also survived by three grandsons and two great grandsons.
Chuck worked for General Motors in Indianapolis for over twenty years and then for Advanced Technology and Testing in Livonia, MI for over a dozen years designing and building test equipment for aircraft, space equipment and automobiles for most of his career. He was always active in the communities where he lived including Plymouth, MI and Rogers, Arkansas. Most recently he was on the Fire Board and on the Gordon Beach Homeowners Association Board in Union Pier, MI. He was active in his church serving on the Board and many committees over time. He loved animals, working on old cars, playing cards, telling stories and generally being a gregarious neighbor and friend. He will be missed greatly by those who knew him.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at his church, St. Luke's Lutheran Church (269-429-1623) at 5020 Cleveland Avenue in Stevensville, MI 49127 in early April. An announcement will be made in this publication when arrangements are final. Memorials may be made to his church, your local veterans' group, the American Diabetes Association or your local animal shelter. His ashes will be joined with his wife's, Lillian's, ashes over Beaver Lake in Rogers, Arkansas this spring by family members.
