I came to know Helen Anderson when her and her husband Gus came to Louisville to take a Church. I was a 19 year old boy and a friend called and said "Ray you got to go to church tonight the new preacher has got a couple of beautiful daughters". I went, and when I laid eyes of Helen's daughter Karen who was only 16 I told my friend "I'm going to marry that girl.". Don't ask me how I had the confidence to think such a thing but I thought it and I did it 2 yrs later. After being run out of the house more than once, forbidden to speak to her, while she was taken every where, and every single Evangelist in the country brought in to match her up with. I was the winner.
I always felt that Helen had a soft spot way down deep in her heart for me though and kept pursuing the girl of my dreams. We dated only 10 months out of 2 years thanks then Mickey my brother-in-law called and said "Gus, I'm bringing Madelyn a ring". and because of that cal I immediately got a call from her Bro. Anderson, and he said 'Ray go get Karen a ring' (this was because according to the Greek culture the oldest daughter had to get married first), Thank you Mickey
When I got married to the girl of my dreams I can truly say Helen and Gus became t he Mother and Father that I never had.
They became my mentors and as I worked along beside them I watched her honor God first and her husband next. This was a family like I had never known before, Loving, Caring, and genuine Christians .
It wasn't long until we gave her first grand daughter Suzanne, then Jonathan, then Julie. Then Helen said it you don't stop having these kids I'm going to ship you off to Africa. I got scared and didn't have any more. !!!!
Oh and that part that Karen said about the way she honored her husband, that was passed down to her daughter's THANK YOU HELEN. I didn't know what to think when the food was passed first to me that Karen and Madelyn had been strictly brought up that the "Husbandman was to be first partakers of the Fruit. I don't know if this was attributed to Karen's father or mother but which ever one it was it works for me.
After my father-in-law passed away, she was the Matriarch, and even though she traveled every where for long periods of time and we would be ministering all over the world for weeks and months at a time and we were going on with our own ministries by that time when she returned back home to our family she picked up being THE QUEEN as if she had never been gone. She was a lways the focus for us at every family gathering whether Christmas, Thanksgiving, or her Birthday, if she was in the country she was the star of the show for our family. I'm going to miss that part desperately, because for me and my 2 brothers Elliott and Paul she wasn't only the Anderson children's mother she was our mother too.
Working for God was her calling the saints of Louisville and Parkersburg can tell you when it came to building or remodeling churches she worked like a man to make the Kingdom of God a more beautiful place all the while helping her husband pastor thriving churches, lead choirs, witness God filling thousands of people receive salvation.
So much more could be said about my beloved mother-in-law but time nor space could ever contain what she meant to me.
Thanks Helen you will be greatly missed.

GOD GAVE A SONG IN THE IMBODIMENT OF HELEN ANDERSON COLE
From my earliest remembrance our home was always filled with music. She was always singing. We started off with an upright piano that she didn't play but taught us girls to play, By the time Mike came along we had moved up in the world and could afford a smaller Spinet Piano. She called every thing outside the straight chords (minors) and it was up to us to figure out by ear what notes that consisted of. She would say if you make a mistake just keep the rhythm going and they will never know it was wrong. All of us took piano lessons but Mother was the one who really taught us how to play. And, I found out that rhythm thing really worked you can fake people out if you just keep the rhythm going. She was the worship leader before they even had a title for it. She sang solo's had trio's lead choirs with songs like.
Amazing Grace was the first solo song I remember her singing.
Little Curly Head
That Little Girl of mine & 2 little Orphan's (Daddy loved for her to sing these songs to Madelyn because the melody was so sweet it always made Madelyn cry that's one thing I remember that she doesn't) Madelyn is our families memory bank.
She recorded and sang "When all of God's Children Get home" (written by her Uncle Virgil M.)
I Woke Up This Morning Feelin Fine with the Beale sisters
She sang The Lord will make a Way
She dedicated a song to 2 very sick ladies in the hospital here in Louisville announcing with gusto "Goodbye World Goodbye"
She would also sing Ditty's that her grandfather taught her. She led the MS state camp choir where one night someone count that we sang "Jesus in The Name" 41 times. I don't know who was counting but I have never figures out why they weren't dancing and running the aisles like everyone else was doing.
She sang I'm a Child of the King and told all the story lines that went with it.
This is the Day, You can Make It, All the Way my Savior Leads me were sine others that she sang, of course the list is endless. But I must move quickly along
Then I never remember living in a messy house. She maybe had us up at midnight cleaning and dusting (evidently she never knew about "Child Labor laws.") But with our help we always lived in a clean house.
She honored her husband, none of us ever remember him doing a dish, touching the laundry, or hanging up his clothes.
Mother had a tremendous prayer life. But it wasn't at 6am it wasn't for an hour at a time it was anytime she felt like it, which to tell you the truth she just had a running dialogue going on with God pretty much all the time. Some times we would just be riding along and she would say "Thank you Jesus, Praise the Lord, or Glory to God" or she do what she called it "Stormin the Fort" and that she did, then there were times she didn't have time to do anything but scream out at the Top of her lungs "JESUS" and that always got God's attention including every one else's. Thru her prayers we found our car that had been stolen. One time we were caught a bad storm on a lake in MI she was sure going to get sucked under Lillie pads where her and my Uncle Jay were fishing she wailed, travailed cried out so loud that my Uncle Jay said "Helen if the storm didn't scare you your praying would" then on a dark highway in MO Hoodlums surrounded our car while we were sleeping I'm sure they were much more frigh tened than we were when she started "Pleading the Blood of Jesus" to the top of her lungs, It didn't matter where it was, on airplanes, when she passed a policeman in IN going 90 mph, when her purse was stolen in Marshall MI with $5,000.00 in it, in the midst of a Tribal war in New Guinea" Crossing flooded Rivers in Asia, The miracles are numerous because of her prayers
She was so intuitive that there was many a time that thoughts would come into my mind and I would get them out real quick or she would tell me what I was thinking, that was real scary.
She did very funny things and then didn't mind if you laughed at her because she would probably be the one to laugh first. So our home wa

When we moved to Russellville, AR thirty plus years ago we had the privilege of meeting the Shields/Anderson family. Their style of worship and praise would fill the church and draw people to Christ. Bro. Shields is a powerful man of God with a wonderful helpmate in Madelyn. The talent level was tremendous, but then we met Sis Cole. WOW!!! Her desire to reach the masses through song and word was effective and powerful. It was clear that the entire family is blessed with ability and a strong love for the lord. We would like to send our condolences to the family on the loss of such a great lady of God, who was deeply loved by many.
We will greatly miss her and we mourn her loss, but we are joyful in knowing that she has victory in death going on to receive her much deserved reward in heaven.
She touched many lives in Australia, with her ministry and love. I was one of the football players, in Sydney at Bro. Slack's church, that was won to the Lord under her ministry, this in turn started a revival in Sydney.
We are so thankful and blessed to have known such a great Lady, and to have been ministered to due to her love and devotion for the Lord Jesus Christ and His Great Commission.
Our loss is heaven's gain.
God bless you.

Upon hearing of the passing of Sis. Cole I have thought over and over of how a legend has lived amongst us, and made such a difference on so many lives. There have fewer than five people who have had such a degree of influence on my life as to shape who I am today, and one of those has been Helen Anderson Cole. Other than my own mother making sure I started piano lessons at age five, the other main person responsible for my music career and successes has been Sis. Cole. From my earliest memories she would look me in the eye and say "can't never did anything" and she refused to let me off the hook when I was eleven years old and didn't feel ready to be the pianist for our church. Really I wasn't ready, but all the good piano players left to evangelize, start churches, married preachers and the only one left was little Jeanie Rigney who actually could only play in three keys, and not very well at first. Every time I saw her over the last 30 years she would say "I taught this girl everything she knows about playing the piano." In spite of the fact that she couldn't actually play, she knew what sounded right and what wasn't right and she made sure I quickly acquired the skills I would need to carry the music in our Louisville church. I think one of the other things I gained from her was my social skills and the ability to be confident whether I'm at a fancy ball in Dallas with millionaires or one-on-one with wealthy clients, or talking to the homeless. Indeed, I love to be the center of attention, the bigger the audience the better, and if you knew her at all you know that trait is straight from her handbook. Because of her I pursued a career in music, and as a result of her pushing me, my own children are all very actively involved in music with music degrees from prestigious universities and currently directing music programs. She also taught me to listen to the Spirit and be in tune with what most other people don't hear because they don't listen. I recall her many stories she told me as I was growing up, and I'll never forget the time we were all working around the church at 4th & M, on an off-night (not very many of those "off-nights!") and she and I both heard someone call loudly "Helen"... she said "Gus, who was that? It sounded like Bro. Branding!" He didn't hear it, my parents didn't hear it, but I heard the man's voice call her name at the same time. We found out a few hours later that was the moment when Harry Branding died and had called out her name from several hundred miles from where we were. I grew up with those stories of faith, of winning against all odds, of determination, of succeeding at everything, and to this day I never, ever give up. I always win (at whatever I want to win at!) and I have the confidence to believe that I can do anything because Helen Anderson Cole told me I could do anything and wouldn't settle for less than the very best. She will live on in my heart and I'll always have nothing but feelings of great love and appreciation for the difference she has made in my life and the lives of my children. I remember this great woman of God teaching and leading the choir at WV Camp Meeting for most of my teen years. And quite often doing a little preaching too while she had us there. I just spoke of her last week.
You the family and the earthly body of Christ has suffered a terrible loss this week. But one valliant soldier has earned her right to proclaim,
I have fought a good fight, I have finished [my] course, I have kept the faith:
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: 2Ti 4:7-9
May we all join her soon at His coming, and may the peace of God comfort you in the interim.

To: Mike, Kris, Karen, Ray, Madelyn, Mickey, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren….
We stand together with the countless number who gather to honor Sis. Helen Anderson Cole, an icon in Pentecost, in family and in community, who exampled steadfastness to truth, zealousness for Christianity and passion for God. She broke the glass ceiling long before its existence was admitted, and soared far beyond the norm in her personal achievements and spiritual accomplishments. Earth's loss can never be replaced, and heavens addition can never be richer. May all her family and friends be enriched by the spiritual endowment Aunt Helen left for everyone whose life was touched by this great Christian lady.
Aunt Helen always made our life exciting. As a child we loved going to her house because she made us all feel welcome and the children were important to her. Her and Uncle Gus would drop everything and we would sit around talking and visiting. She instilled confidence in all children. She would take a great interest in you. She was an encourager. I remember when she would come to our house we could sit and listen to her for hours tell us about her travels. We felt like we could never do anything like that but she let us know that we absolutely could. One time she held at 3 week revival at my Mom and Dad's church. That was a great time for our family and the church because she was always so much fun to be around and happy with so much to give. My husband Curtis mentioned how she was always upbeat no matter what situation was in her life. She had a tremendous confidence in God. We loved Aunt Helen she will always be a great influence that helped shaped our lives.

Many condolences from around the WORLD!
To Mike, Karen, Madeline, Kris, Mickey and Ray and all the grandchildren and greatgrandchildren:
Your mother Helen has been in the Anderson family for 70 years. She has had a remarkable career in the ministry.
She was a Singing Evangelist ,before she married my brother Rev. Gus Anderson, at the age of eighteen.
She was a woman of many talents. Singing, speaker, author. I accompanied her on the piano in some of her
and Brother Anderson's revivals. She and Gus raised you children in the church teaching you to sing and take
part in church. After Brother Anderson's death , she traveled singing and preaching for a short time before marrying
Brother J.C.Cole. She traveled with Brother Cole singing and preaching and made Eleven trips to Australia . After his
death , she continues her travels for many years. She truly dedicated her life to the true church of those that
baptize in Jesus Name and believe in the Holy Ghost speaking with others Tongues. Only God knows how many
lives have been touched by her ministry. She was a great hostess and a very colorful person. She will be greatly
missed. To Mike, Karen , Madeline and the many grand and great grand children , you had a mother and grandmother
to be proud of.
Love,
Aunt June and Uncle Howard Davis
Howard H. Davis
To All the Anderson Family with my sincerest feelings,
Though I am writing you to tell you how sorry I am for your loss...I am much more impressed, with such a drive of emotion, to say what a wonderful day this really is! Yes, you have loss one of the dearest people in your lives, but please don't look at it that way. We are human and can't help to look through the eyes of the carnal man which makes our hearts ache…still the facts are these;
Eighty some years ago a little girl full of life and talent came into this world to fulfill her destiny and bring joy to those who surrounded her through her love, kind words & an anointed voice from which mocked the sound of a trumpet! What a day of celebration then and what a day to celebrate even now! A day set aside many years ago that marked a special birthday has become even more precious now....the day she went HOME. The most priceless gift has come your way...not marking an end of a live, for a dear Mother we all shared apart of, but marking the day she received her reward! A reward placed into such worthy hands. A reward sought after for so many long enduring years.
The years of hard work and keeping the commandments of God in all that she under took. Suffering loss twice herself yet continuing the race that was set before her. Willing to do and go anywhere at anytime, finances nor age could stop her! The countless souls she won to the Lord, while others looked on with intimidation and great hesitation…needless to say, these same people stood in amazement of how she, armed with only a kind word and a caring Mother's touch, could melt the heart of the toughest gangster or show love to a fragile, lonely homeless person. With her charm and faith and a laugh, as contagious as the common cold, innumerable souls were reborn into the most wonderful family of God as their names were written in the Lamb's Book of Life.
What a heritage has been left with you all. The love of a Mother that you have taken cherished, neutered and passed onto your children and the grand-daughters and sons for generations to come...you all have such a unique part of Mother/Granny in you. She will never die, a part of her will remain in each of you...what a blessing!
As I look at each of her children… in you she gave apart of herself, apart that will live on through the passing down from generation to generation. Sis. Perry; she gave her talent and strong voice that rings with a distinction that no one could match. In Sis. Madeline Shields; she gave her soft touch yet her push to get things done no matter it's obstacles which proves the true strength which she held within. Bro. Anderson; we have always seen you as a product of the tower like strength your D

Words cannot express the impact that Sister Helen Anderson-Cole's many visits to Australia had on the church. Her ministry in song and exhortation was wonderfully anointed and resulted in many many souls being saved as she travelled from one side of our nation to the other. To the pastors she was a mother through some of our most difficult years. To all she met she was a lover of their soul drawing them to Jesus.
To the family of our dear Sister, the United Pentecostal Church of Australia sends their sincere love and condolences. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful woman with us.

Bro and Sis Anderson,
We are so very sorry for the loss of Sis Cole!
My very first memory of Sis Cole is when I was a little girl I had not met her yet but I found she was coming to Parkersburg and was to marry Bro Cole.
The biggest thing I remember was the atmosphere in our church and how it changed. It seemed that our church and Bro Cole had been in Mourning for a long time and even when things got back to what would be normal everyday living there was just something missing. I could have never put it in words as a little girl but now I know what I felt. Now there was excitement and happiness in the air the atmosphere had changed!!! Sis Cole Changed everything!! Things happened when she was around you just never knew what! I can truly say that every life in the Parkersburg Church was better for knowing her! I remember service after service when we were in the Building Project that she would call on her "BOYS" Leroy Sexton, my Dad (Charlie Bayer), Kenny Sexton, and Jr Sexton to give, I know for a fact that many times they gave all they had and did not think about the next day how things would be met....I think they would have done anything for her and a lot of times did. I also remember her love for Children, music and singing, if there were 5 or 500 people there was going to be a choir of some kind, and always some type of music being played, it did not matter if you did not know how to play just pick it and and play it!! I am so glad I was raised in church during those years. She taught us all how to "LOVE" people to Christ!
She has changed lives of people from small towns and villages to big cities and even countries all over the world!! This world is a better place for having known her. I loved working for her and even traveling with her a few times.
I love your family and all of you are in my prayers, my heart also goes out to Julie, as a "Grandma's Girl" myself with my Grandma Mackey I understand the loss, and appreciate all she did to help Sis Cole these last few years...
I truly loved Sis Cole and will miss her greatly!
Love and Prayers,
James, Brenda, Jessica and Morganne

Dear Br Anderson and family
We greet you at this sad time in Jesus' name. You are all in our prayers as you deal with the great sorrow of the loss of your precious Mother.
Sister Cole was a very great lady. To you a wonderful Mother who was so proud of her family. She spoke of you all so much and showed us pictures ...so much so that in the end we not only felt 'part of the family' but also that we knew you all personally. She always conveyed the fact that hers was the most talented wonderful family in the world.
To us she was a light in a dark place. She came to us personally at a very dark time in our lives and helped us through much heartache.
To the Australian church she was the catalyst that God used to 'start things rolling' in this land so opposed to the truth of God's Word.
Dear Brother, I can't find the right words to say how much we loved and revered this wonderful lady. She will be sorely missed right around the world.
Our hearts are with you at this time.
Bev & Geoff Holden Australia.
My Helen Anderson
God shapes our life for our future
In the most beautiful way with
Someone we meet unexpected
To scatter flowers for us day to day.
At 17, I had finished High School
And was visiting in Arkansas
And there was to be a great rally
So we hurried there and it was Helen I saw.
She was 18, on her honeymoon
For she had just married Gus
As Helen Anderson stepped to the mike
I heard the greatest singer in Pentecost
And meet her I must.
She walked to the pulpit and began to lift her voice
Singing 'Amazing Grace'
And it filled that Brush Arbor meeting
Then we both knew we must meet face to face.
70 years have past
And always she made the heavens ring
But we got together when good things happened
For being happy in God was our thing.
Helen, tell everybody you meet

Only time and eternity will reveal the throngs of people that were touched by the ministry of Helen Anderson Cole. I am thankful that God allowed her to become an influence in my music ministry while I was at a very young age. As a child, two of her LPs were in the small collection of records that belonged to my family. It would be impossible to know the number of times that I played those records. In recent years, it was my privilege to accompany her at Calvary Tabernacle in Indianapolis. I loved to hear her sing the song that she is singing in heaven now, "I've told all my troubles goodbye...Now don't you weep for me when I'm gone...Goodbye World, Goodbye!"

One of the advantages of growing up in the church that I did was getting to know many relatives of the Starr Family. One such relative was Sis. Helen Anderson-Cole. I loved it when she made an appearance at our church. She always had an elegant wrap around her shoulders and greeted everyone with a smile. Then she would sing, and fill the house with praise. What a voice! She fought the Good Fight, and ran the race well. May her soul rest in peace.

Remembering your mother's ministry in the Royal Oak Church. I remember from my childhood days how she often sang with our choir. One song stands out in my memory... "You Must Be, Don't You See You've Got to Be Born Again!" She and your dad were a great blessing whenever they came.
Many years later, she came to Detroit and ministered at New Life Apostolic (Bro. Charles Grisham). What a joy it was to renew the acquaintance and hear her sing... "Don't Give Up On the Brink of a Miracle!"
We see in her that a life lived for Jesus is never lived in vain. May all the generations and lives she touched rise up and call her blessed!
