I was a manager at the Big Boy in Niles and Rev. Fred would come in dress in Santa suit and meet and greet all the customers and workers. (I have video of this event).
And when he wasn't Santa it was Rev. Fred and Mr. Grady coming into the Big Boy for supper and hours of conversation was shared with both and many cups of coffee were poured. I last got to talk with Rev. Fred about two years or so ago when I was at the hospital seeing my Dad. Rev. Smith was making hospital visits as hospital Chaplin and came in and prayed with our family my Dad. I'm sorry I was not able to pay my respect to Rev. Fred on Tuesday.

Fred was always so kind. I remember when he came home from the army he took me to Grand Rapids and bought me 2 new dresses. He was such a wonderful brother. He took me to college to enroll me in my freshnan year. He often brought me to his house for weekends. I have many more fond memories!

It was a pleasure to take over Uncle Fred's buisness and be there before and when he passed away. My wife and I were happy to be his DPOA as he wished. I visited his home as a young boy and camped out with him and his Boy Scout troup at Morley and Lake City. He was there for me when my dad was killed on a farm accident when I was ten years old. He came back and rode the tractor with me as I cut and raked the hay that year. I liked when he just popped in to visit us. Much appreciation for all his many friends who came to see him these last months, especially to Marta Dodd whom he had known since she was a young girl. We will celebrate his life and promotion. His suffereing is ended and he is with his Lord and Savior. We will all miss him greatly.

Christmas and Uncle Fred's visits go hand in hand. He missed spending Christmas to with our family the same number of times that he missed attending the family reunion in Morrestown...very few! One year, he brought his Santa suit with him. I must have been about 4 years old at the time. He came in dressed as Santa and really made the occasion special for my brothers and me. Of course, we didn't know that it was really Uncle Fred. I kept looking out the window wanting to go outside to see the sleigh and reindeer on our roof! He was a special man that truely knew how to share some special times.

Uncle Fred, for many years, shared Christmas and Easter with our family. We always looked forward to having him with us on the holidays and other special times, too. The last Christmas he spent with us in our home, Uncle Fred shared many of his World War II experiences, which he never talked alot about before. That was a special time to hear the stories of his experiences. We will miss having Uncle Fred as part of our family. He is with his Heavenly family now!

I remember when I was a little girl Uncle Fred came to my grandparents house (Lenna Vay and Calvin Devitt) to visit and he played baseball with me with a little plastic bat and a wiffle ball. He always had a smile on his face and that is how I will always remember him.
