This is a very simple memory of two very little kids. Eddie lived on the northeast corner of Browntown Rd. and Cleveland Ave. I lived on the southwest corner of the same intersection. Eddie was my first playmate who wasn’t my cousin. I have no idea how old we were, maybe six or seven years, maybe even younger. My mom gave me a little red purse, and I didn’t know what ladies put in their purses. I remember showing my empty purse to Eddie, and I may have asked his opinion on what goes in a purse.
The next time he came over he had a half used tube of scarlet red lipstick in a silver case, and he gave it to me to put in the purse. I was too afraid to put the lipstick on because I thought I would get in trouble. I kept that lipstick a very long time.
I don’t remember who moved away first, but we moved from that house in 1961. I still had that lipstick which I’m pretty sure belonged to Eddie’s mom.
Eddie was sweet and kind to me, and it created confidence, which is a gift money cannot buy.
