Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles “Chuck” Bakeman, 90, of Niles, passed away on Friday, November 27, 2020, at his home. He was born on November 19, 1930, in Pokagon Township, Michigan, to the late Karl R. and Rose Emma (Krohne) Bakeman. Chuck graduated in 1949 from Dowagiac Central High; soon after graduation, he enlisted into the United States Navy. On October 25, 1958, he married the love of his life, Thelma “Jean” Fitz. To that union, two sons were born. Chuck worked for many years as a supervisor and heavy equipment operator, building and repairing highways. He was very involved with the local Masonic Lodge, doing a lot of volunteer work, raising money for the Shriners’ Children Hospital. Chuck never met a stranger; he was always ready with a quick, funny story. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife Thelma, until her passing in 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved wife Thelma; his sons, James, and Dondi; siblings, Ronald Bakeman, Ted Bakeman, Janice Behnke, Robert Bakeman, and Richard Bakeman. Chuck is survived by his special lady friend, Joanne Huling; brothers, Sonny (Leslee)Bakeman of Dowagiac; Gerald (Sandy) Bakeman of Dowagiac; and Evelyn Williams of Dowagiac; along with a host of nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the local Masonic Lodge, specifically to the Shriners’ Children’s Hospital. A time of public visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, from 12:00 noon until 1:00 PM. He will be laid to rest next to his beloved Thelma at Mission Hills Memorial Garden. Chuck's family will be hosting a Celebration of Life luncheon on May 16, 2021, at The Dowagiac Lion's Club, 28606 Blue Bird Street, Dowagiac, MI 49047 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. All are welcome. Because of the COVID-19 virus, The State of Michigan requires all in attendance to follow all guidelines including, social distancing, mandatory mask, and sanitizing.
