You taught me how to sew
And you taught me how to cook,
You always shared the title
When you read a good book.
You showed me how to stand up
When life tried to knock me down,
You made me to look for laughter
When I really wanted to frown.
You guided me on how to mother
As I raised my son,
You gave me independence
As my parenting had just begun.
You warned me about pride
And cautioned not to let it get in the way,
You suggested I take time for myself
In rest and in play.
You held on to your dignity
When life took so much away,
And rose and faced the world
Every single day.
You showed me true strength
As your life moved toward the end,
I held you in my arms
And cried with you, my mother, my friend.
You have returned home
And broken is my heart still,
As I do need my Mama
And fear I always will.
So I hold you tightly to my soul
And imagine you hold me too,
Because I need to know you are with me
As it's the best that I can do.
