Donald E. Elrod, 85, of Niles, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, at Lakeland Hospital in Niles. Donald was born on November 25, 1934, to the late James and Mae Agnes (Mayfield) Elrod in Manchester, Tennessee. After graduating from Niles High School, Donald proudly served his country, enlisting in the United States Army. On June 9, 1956, he wed the former Deanna Marks in Angola, Indiana. Donald retired from the French Paper Mill Company in Niles. He and Deanna loved to travel, they have seen forty-nine of the fifty states; Alaska was on their bucket list. Donald and Deanna were avid supporters of the boys and girls basketball teams at Grace Church in Granger. He was preceded in death by his parents; James and Mae Elrod; his son, Chris; siblings, Gerald Elrod, Cora Mae Elrod-Frazier, and Jean Robinette. Donald is survived by his wife, Deanna Elrod of Niles; brothers, James (Doris) Elrod and Jack Elrod; and several nieces and nephews, whom he adored. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, March 5, 2020, at Grace Church, 52025 Gumwood Road, Granger, Indiana. Visitation will begin at 6:00 PM. Burial will be on Friday at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions in his memory may be directed to Grace Church.
