Obituary of Raymond Hunsberger

Raymond E. Hunsberger, 79, of Dowagiac, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, August 29, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 14, 1938 in Jones, Michigan to the late Walter and Kathryn (Tyler) Hunsberger. After graduating high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving his country proudly from 1957 until 1961. On May 4, 1963 he married Virginia Gelnett at a ceremony in Cassopolis. Raymond worked a variety of trades but spent the major part of his career as a truck driver. He was a member of the Diamond Cove Missionary Church in Cassopolis, the Dowagiac Conservation Club, American Legion Post 365 in Edwardsburg, a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1855 in Dowagiac and served with the Cass County Sheriff Posse. Ray enjoyed outdoor activities such as Fishing, camping and hunting. He also enjoyed playing cards and traveling. Horses were a big part of Raymond's life including, riding, racing and pulling. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Kenneth and Charles Hunsberger, a brother-in-law, Lester Westphal and a sister-in-law, Sherry Hunsberger. Raymond is survived by his wife of over fifty-four years, Virginia Hunsberger of Dowagiac, a daughter, Kimberly (Arnold) Carpenter of Niles, a son, Jeffery (Susanne) Hunsberger of Edwardsburg, three grandchildren; Justin (Morgan) Carter of Arkansas, Evan and Nathan Hunsberger of Edwardsburg, two great-grandchildren, McKinley and Adalynn, a sister, Lois Westphal of Three Rivers, a brother, Thomas Hunsberger of Markle, Indiana and two sister-in-law's, Elaine Hunsberger of Three Rivers and Laura Hunsberger of Cassopolis. A service to celebrate Raymond's life will be held on Friday, September 1, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Mission Hills Memorial Chapel, 61453 M51 in Niles, with Pastor Charles Keller officiating. A time of visitation will begin one hour prior at Mission Hills Memorial Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made in Raymond's memory to Hospice at Home or Diamond Cove Missionary Church.
