Obituary of Leslie Ray Akey

Leslie Ray Akey October 24, 1923 April 28, 2008 Leslie Ray Akey, 84, of Creek Road Niles passed away of natural causes in his home Monday April 28, 2008 surrounded by family. Leslie was born to the late Donald and Winifred (Straight) Akey in Vicksburg, Michigan on October 24, 1923, where he remained a resident until joining the US Navy after graduating from Three Rivers High School in 1941. During his time in the military Leslie saw much of Japan. In June of 1946 Leslie married Ella Jean Woolcott at a ceremony in Niles. Jean preceded him in death September 21, 1994. Brothers Robert and Donald Akey also preceded Leslie in death. Leslie enjoyed many areas of employment including: New York Central Railroad, US Aviex, Mission Hills Memorial Gardens and Northern Indiana Developmental Center. Leslie retired in 1992 from the State of Indiana. He enjoyed the outdoors; including hunting, fishing and camping with his family. Dances at the American Legion and Sports were among his favorites. He was a long time Detroit Tigers, Chicago Bears and University of Michigan fan; he always wanted to see the Tigers win another World Championship. Leslie is survived by his son Tim (Lynn) Akey, Granddaughter Niña Akey all of Niles. Lorraine Morse devoted companion of 8 years also survives. Leslie has 7 nieces 5 nephews, extended family and many friends who will treasure his memory. In keeping with Leslie's wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration of life will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, May 24, 2008 at the American Legion 1707 Miller Drive, Niles, Michigan. Those who knew Les best will understand his request to wear casual clothes. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Niles.
