Obituary of Vera Sexton

Vera Lorraine Sexton August 11, 1912 May 26, 2008 Vera Lorraine Sexton, 95, of Schirmer Parkway in Buchanan, Michigan passed away at Westwood of Niles on Monday, May 26, 2008 following a brief illness. Vera was born on August 11, 1912 to the late Harry and Edith (Brant) Spaulding. She was the middle child of 3 in the Spaulding family. After graduating from high school in New Troy, Michigan in 1930 Vera achieved her County Normal Degree and taught at the Kansas School just outside of Buchanan until she was married. On June 2, 1934 Vera wed the love of her life, Phillip Sexton, at a small ceremony in South Bend, Indiana. Together they traveled the world, visiting several countries and all 50 states while also raising a wonderful family. Together they had 3 loving children. In her younger years Vera was an amazing golfer. She was a member of the Orchard Hills Country Club and then the Chikaming Country Club where she acquired the nickname 'Tiger' due to her straight and aggressive golf game. This even followed her to the Oxbow Country Club in LaBelle, Florida where she and Phillip spent many of their winters. Together they traveled extensively but were always drawn back to Berrien County where hey were life long residents. Vera joined the Niles Curves in 2006 and was the darling of the local chapter. She worked out faithfully with her daughter and granddaughter until just days before her passing. Vera was even featured in an article in the South Bend Tribune as the oldest and most active member at the age of almost 95. When Vera wasn't going to college, raising her children or out golfing she could be found playing the organ at her home, crocheting one of her famous afghans or even painting and doing crafts. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Elton Spaulding and sister Ruth Valerius. Vera is survived by her husband of 74 years, Phillip, Son Ramon (Joy) Sexton of Layton, Utah, Daughters Janis Sexton of Buchanan, Michigan and Loralee (Craig) Murchland of Decatur, Georgia, 10 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren and numerous step great and great-great-grandchildren. Vera has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date this summer. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Niles.
