I will never forget Bill. I remember leaning back in my chair one day (9th grade at Ballard Junior High School ~1974) in the cafeteria and Bill telling me in no uncertain terms to, "put all four legs on the floor". My immediate quip was, "there are four legs on the floor". Of course I was being at wise guy and meant the two back chair legs and my two legs were on the floor. He wasn't very happy with my response and let me know it with an immediate frown which let me know he meant business - He always did. As a kid we all thought my response was hilarious. As an adult I look back with respect for his concern for my safety and feel quite differently. Bill was never afraid to let you know if he didn't think you were behaving properly and when present always made it his business to prod you into the right direction. I am 52 years old now and still think about Bill and that day. I don't often cruise through obituaries but I guess that I was meant to find out that the man I have included in my personal lore for years and shared with friends and my kids has passed on. He was the genuine article and if I may say so, reminds me a lot of myself today. Godspeed Bill, you will be missed.

I remember Bill from Ballard Jr. High as a student. I once skipped a class and bill saw me sitting around near the gymnasium alone. When asked what was i doing there i just said i wanted to be alone. He escorted me to the office. From then on he would see me and say "I'm sorry i have to do my job and he would smile as to say it will be ok. He was a hard worker who always had a smile for everyone. God Bless his family during this difficult time.

My heartfelt sympathies to the family. I met Bill at Thomas Stadium through my son, Mike. I was training to help announce the games there. Bill would always check up on me to see if I needed anything and make sure I was not getting frustrated. He made my job easier. Bill was one of the favorites at Thomas Stadium. He was always interested on how your day was and made sure time was made to take interest. My favorite memory that involved Bill:
Bill came up to the pressbox to see if I needed anything. As he was inquiring on how my day went, we engaged in some joke telling. Unfortunately, the microphone was accidently turned on. Before you knew it, the whole stadium could hear us both laughing and giggling. Bill's face looked like he just got sunburned when we got the call from the umpires, letting us know the microphone was on and everyone was wondering why we were giggling.

I met Bill in 1977, I was a 7th grader full of what boys that age are full of. He never missed an oppurtunity to smile and remind me I was still full of it all through the years. Life gives us too few people like him, I guess that's what makes them so special to us. Our community is a better place because he made a difference in many ways. My entire family feels your loss and will cherish his memory always.

I've been acquented with Bill since I started annoucing at Thomas Stadium in 2001. I know how much he ment to the Niles Vikings program and also to Babe Ruth. He was like an assistant athletic director per say. He was good at keeping everyone in line and making sure the events went smoothly. He was always joyful and pleasant to be around and I'm going to miss him.
