Glenna Marie Bennett, 61, of Downey Street in Dowagiac passed away at Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph on Sunday, April 5, 2009. Glenna was born on June 1, 1947 to the late William and Betty "Becky" Merrill in Dowagiac, Michigan. William passed away when Glenna was young. Becky wed Jason McIntyre and together they raised her. She was one of 3 children in the McIntyre household. After school Glenna attended college for 2 years and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She wed the love of her life, Bill Bennett, on May 10, 1990 at a ceremony in Cassopolis, Michigan Glenna worked at Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac for many years until she wed Bill in 1990 and retired to be a stay at home wife. Glenna was always taking care of other people. She and Bill traveled and Glenna always wanted to take care of someone wherever they went, especially if it was one of her grandchildren. She loved playing cards, being a member of the Women of the Moose #933 in Dowagiac and also a founding member of the Golden Girls Club in Dowagiac. After her retirement she couldn't sit idle so she took on part time work at Booth's Country Floral and Caruso's Candy Kitchen, both of Dowagiac. She is preceded in death by her husband Bill in 2006, parents and siblings Bruce Merrill and Debbie Tackitt. Glenna is survived by her children Darren (Roxanne) Johnson of Elkhart, Indiana, Missey Johnson of Dowagiac, Michigan Steve (Julie) Johnson of Dowagiac and nephew Jason (Kerri) Bell of Belton, Missouri whom she thought of as a son. She is also survived by her brother Doug Merrill of Dowagiac, 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 from 12-2 p.m. at Mission Hills Memorial Chapel with a service to honor Glenna immediately following; family friend Bobby Howard will be officiating. Glenna will be interred at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens in the Garden of Gethsemane. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mission Hills Memorial Chapel and Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Services, both of Niles.
