I have just returned from a beautiful service in Shawns memory and it was wonderful to hear how he touched the lives of everyone he had contact with. I now sit alone in Hoosierdads Music and realize the finality of his all-too short life. I look into his former lesson room and reflect on the many kids whose life he so positively touched, all the laughter that flowed from the room and how much he will be missed.
This is going to seen very surreal for a long time to come and I can only pray that he has found the peace he deserves. My heart aches for his family and friends for the loss of such a beautiful soul.

I am the grandmother of Mina and Darius. Shawn taught them guitar for almost a year. As a former educator, I recognize when a teacher truly cares about the kids he teaches. That's the kind of teacher Shawn was. The kids know it, too. I am so sorry to hear of Shawn's passing. My prayers are with those he left behind.

I've countless memories, I considered the guy my best friend. He cared more about me than anyone not blood related and I considered him a brother. A few years back I was down on my luck with no car and I needed to get Chicago for a job interview and he went out of his way to get me there driving for hours. He didn't ask for a thing in return and that's just one of many examples. I've always counting on us getting together from time to time and he has been a highlight of my life for a long long time. I'll miss you Shawn and I don't know what life is going to be like without you.

Steve, Kathy, and Erin, I had to read it twice. I couldn't believe it was Shawn. It seems like it was just recently that I saw him and he was just a little kid. Steve, I can't say how many times over the many years we would be talking and his name came up. Shawn had an adventuresome spirit and it was always interesting to hear what project he was taking on next. I know how much you all loved him and will miss him. I will miss him too.

Our children have taken guitar lessons from Shawn for over 2 1/2 years. We all are very sadden by his passing. Both of them always looked forward to being with Shawn and they couldn't wait each week to have Shawn show them how to play a new song that they had just heard. The kids were very excited about his new studio and enjoyed seeing all the progress every week. We are very sorry for your loss. He will always be remembered. His welcoming smile, his infectious laugh and his constant encouragement will not be forgotten.

My son, Tom, took guitar lessons from Shawn. Tom adored Shawn. Every time I picked Tom up after guitar, he was in such a better mood than I dropped him off. Shawn had a way of seeing the good in others and making them shine. When he smiled his beautiful smile, his eyes sparkled. He was a very gifted teacher with a huge heart.
The legacy that Shawn leaves behind is not the moment of his departure from this earth. It is those thousands of moments that he gave a bit of himself to each of us. We are lucky to have known such a kind soul. I hope your family finds a way through this grief, and I hope that my son will continue to play guitar so that Shawn will live on in his music.

Jess and I were talking yesterday about how at one point in everyone's life Shawn was your best friend for like 3 or 4 months. In that time span you spent a good part of everyday doing stuff, and laughing your ass off. Then he would leave, but he would always come back. It is so hard to think that he won't be back with a 12-pack of Labatt's at the front door anymore. Everyone in the Nelson family, George, Phil, Linda, Jess, Charles, Hank and Everett miss you dearly.

As we try and cope during these difficult times my son and I went to a music swap meet in Lakeville. While there, he picked up a guitar and started to play. I realized then, that a part of Shawn will live on every time my son and Shawn's other students play. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

Deep down, I really wish we could have started a sweet blues band. I never could get the nerve to sit and discuss. Life gets in the way and people drift apart. Not being able to jam with you and just talk to you is just terrible. It was great knowing you. You were a funny guy and a great guitar player. You will be eternally missed and not forgotten. I hope you're at peace now.

Shawn, you have no clue how much this hurts me. we've been good friends for a long time. i still can't believe this has happened and it will probably take me a long time to get over it. i'm so sorry dude, i feel so bad. i should have been there more. i mean, i could have just found a new job. i will miss you forever dude and i will never forget the stupid things we did, the laughs we had, and the support you always showed me. when i wrecked my car who was there to get me and then drive me around and cheer me up? you were. when my family went to florida for christmas and i couldn't go because of work, who came and got me so i didn't have to spend christmas eve alone? you did. when the rest of my friends forgot my birthday...you remembered and you took me out for lunch. i'm so sorry i couldnt help you like you did me. there is a hole in my heart now that will never heal. i hope i will see you again someday. until then... farewell.

It's hard to watch the sun rise because it means we have to face another day.
It's harder still to watch it arc across the sky because it means we have to move & breathe.
It's hardest yet to watch it set because it means we DID go on and we will go on and on and on and on…
The birds sing, the wind whispers, and people pass by as if it's just another day.
And we put one foot in front of the other, dragging along as we remind ourselves to move & breathe.
But it's not another day; it's the same, exact day, and it just keep dragging on and on and on…
It's hard to believe that the sights we see and the sounds we hear ARE another day.
It's harder still to remind ourselves that, like it or not, it is ok to move & breathe.
It's harder still to drudge up the strength to force ourselves to go on and on and on…
But it's not all noise; it's the music of life and, in spite of our protests it heralds another day.
And its rhythm, though haunting, prods us along, forcing us to move & breathe.
And the discord won't last; it's just a part of the song that he left behind to inspire us & drive us
To go on and on and on…
(but the tune won't be that same without you, cuz!)

An Angel on loan,
Has now earned his wings,
Now his voice rises high,
With God's chorus he sings.
His life was a wonder,
Beautiful and Blessed,
Your hearts are now heavy,
Burdened by this test.
Remember the laughter,
The good times not bad.
Take time to cherish,
The time that you had.
Life is always on loan,
The end lingering near,
But with God's loving hand,
There is nothing to fear.
Celebrate his life,
He is always close by,
Tell him "I love you",
To hear an Angel sigh.

Shawn taught me how to play "Come as you are" by Nirvana, knowing that this was my favorite band, on guitar. He also taught me how to read tab. I also remember my first time playing Halo at his house with him, Ian, Jason, and Logan. It was fun. He was always fun to be around, even when we worked together at the Ready Theatre. When I seen his band on PBS I was proud to know one of the next great rock stars. We will all miss you Shawn.

My heart is broken for the entire family. Shawn was such a talented young man. With so much potential. I met him only once when he played the music for Jeremiah (my son) and Erin's (Shawn's sister) wedding.
It is so hard to know what to say at this time because it was so unexpected and Shawn was so young. I will keep the family in my prayers. May God's love be with you during your time of grief. Rosie Johnson
