Obituary of William J. Mason Sr.

William J. "Scooter" Mason, 79, of Niles, passed away at his residence on Saturday afternoon, July 22, 2017. He was born on July 26, 1937 in Niles to the late John and Harriett (Reid) Mason. William graduated from Niles High School and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force shortly after. William served the Niles community as an officer with the Niles Police Department for over ten years. He retired after many years in sales with the R.V. Industry. On November 11, 1982 William married Shirley M. Herrmann at a ceremony in Cassopolis. He was a member of Saint Mark Catholic Church in Niles. He and Shirley enjoyed traveling, especially their eleven cruises and their special annual destination was the British Virgin Islands - often with friends Lorrie & Bruce Vosburgh. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed all sports of Notre Dame and a lifelong Chicago Cubs Fan. William cherished most his time spent with his family. William was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley Mason, who passed on April 20, 2017, granddaughter, April Sue Mason, who passed in 2010 and a brother. William is survived by his children; Serita Mason of Niles, William (Melissa) Jr. Mason of Kannapolis, North Carolina, twins Carrie Mason and Cherrie (& Jeff) Strausbaugh, both of Chillicothe, Ohio; grandchildren, twins Desiree & Jasmine Love, and Alisha Stransbaugh. The Memorial Mass for William Mason will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Saint Mark Catholic Church in Niles by the Rev. Thomas King, C.S.C. and Brother Dennis Meyers, C.S.C. of the parish. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made in William's memory to Hospice at Home, 4025 Health Park Lane, St. Joseph, Michigan 49085.
