Obituary of Michael E. Lewis

Michael E. "Louie" Lewis, 60, of Edwarsdburg, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2012 at his sister's residence in Niles, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born the son of Leo Lewis and Ellen Pennycuff on October 21, 1951 in South Bend, Indiana. Lewis was raised by Bruce and Ellen Berkey in Niles and attended Brandywine schools. A truck driver most of his life, he traveled the country hauling steel. In his spare time Lewis enjoyed listening to music, reading, quiet times in the ocean and spending time with family and friends. He is preceded in death by his father Bruce Berkey, a brother Theodore "Ted" Berkey and his former wife Beverly Dunnifan. He is survived by his mother Ellen Berkey of Niles, two sons Zachary Underwood of Florida, Jimmy Lewis of Berrien Springs, two daughters Charity Lewis of Indianapolis, Indiana and Sarah Fischer of Saginaw, Michigan, two grandchildren, a brother Trevern "Trev" Berkey of Granger, Indiana, three sisters; Fonda (Mike) Ford of Morganton, North Carolina, Melody (Tom) VanZant of Niles, Michigan and Thelma (Brian) Schrader of Granger, Indiana and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service to celebrate Mike and Ted's life will be help on Saturday February 11, 2012 at 2:00 with visitation beginning at noon at Portage Road General Baptist Church, 1765 Portage Road in Niles, Michigan. Memorial Contribution may be made to the family in C/O Brown Funeral Home 521 E. Main Street, Niles, MI 49120.
