Very saddened to hear this. Some good memories of a good, good man. One of my favorites was going to lunch with him one summer day in Granger and talking very little about work and a lot about our mutual family roots (Los Angeles) and our mutual love for fastpitch softball. Penny, the smile on his face was always a bit brighter when you were with him. God's peace to you and your family.

I was blessed to work with Judge Deats when I was a juvenile probation officer in Cass County. I always loved listening to Judge Deats and Judge Dobrich telling stories of the good old days. He was an amazing man who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Sending prayers of comfort and peace to his family and friends.

We are greatly saddened to learn of the passing away of Judge Paul E, Deats. I practiced in front of Paul during the entire time he served as the judge of Cass Counties 4th District Court. He was always fair to both sides and very considerate. We will always remember him with fondness. His family has much to be proud of. Bill & Judy Lawrence.

My sincere condolences to the family. I first met Judge Deats when I worked as a Corrections Officer and would escort inmates to his court. He was impressive sitting on the bench in his black robe, but even more impressive when he would often come into the office while I was waiting for paperwork and he would take time to just chat. Many of our conversations were about his vast collection of Garcia ties, which he wore so well. I have many fond memories of Judge Deats, and even more of Paul Deats, the man who always had a smile, a hug and kind words whenever we would meet. Rest in peace your Honor, you will never be forgotten.

I am so saddened to here this news and sending my love to Penny and the family . I first met Paul and Penny in 1971 when we were all new to Notre Dame. The people from Florida and California who had a long lasting friendship. Sledding and tobogganing in the freezing cold when no one else was crazy enough to be out there. Our many trips back to visit and attend football games will always remain close to my heart. I will miss his funny emails. All my love to you Penny❤️

I was very shocked to see a great Man has been taken from all who love him so dearly. Yes, Paul Deats was a wonderful man, a great Friend to mana great mentor to all. My husband loved Paul, they laughed together went white water rafting together, what fun and great memories we all have of that time. There were times I would see Paul on the street in Cassopolis he always had a big smile. Thank you for all the memories Paul. My thoughts and prayers are with you Penny. As I know what you are going through.
Lovingly Nancy Clayborn Geegan.

I first met my favorite Judge in 1986(ish) when Becky invited me to her sixth-grade birthday party. And I feel like I didn't leave their house for the next 7 years. Paul introduced me to the Beach Boys and Star Trek (I didn't understand what his license plate "Beam Me Up" meant!) He and Penny (and Becky!) took me to Cedar Point for the first time and introduced me to all things Notre Dame. Supporting all of us through high school sports and bad teenage decisions. Always a big hug when I walked through the door. His support meant the world to me. All my love to the Deats Family.

We are deeply sorry to read of Paul’s passing. He was a fun loving all around great guy. A memory that comes to mind was the bus trip to West Virginia, where we had a lot of fun white water rafting and rock repelling. We send our deepest sympathy to Penny, Becky, Wayne and Meagan and their families.

This is such sad news to hear of Paul’s passing! He was a delightful individual and always had a smile for everyone. Our paths crossed many times while he was judge, but not in court. Lindy’s at lunch, festivals in Dowagiac and sometimes at other events we both just happened to be at. I was introduced to him by Sue Dobrich & I am glad that he became a casual friend. My condolences go out to you Penny. He was a great guy & had a big heart. I know he will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Deats! Such a loving man and was loved so much by the Edwardsburg Community. I have a few memories to share……he was always at the softball games cheering Becky and our team on; White water rafting trip to West Virginia. He fell out of the raft during one of the rapids and my Uncle Mike and dad had to help him back in. Another memory I have is my dad and step mom said “I do” as he married them. Penny, Becky, Wayne, Megan, and family, my deepest condolences. Praying for comfort, strength, and peace during this time. ❤️
