Obituary of Robert John Ponda, Jr.

Robert “Bobby” J. Ponda, Jr. of Niles passed away Friday, December 30, 2022.

He was born to the late Robert Sr. and Gayle (Gibson) Ponda in Gary, Indiana on a gorgeous fall day on October 21, 1969.

Robert was well known when he was in high school, setting records for weight lighting, but he also officially served as the class president and unofficially as the class clown.

After graduating from Chesterton High School, Robert spent most of his career working as an Iron Worker for Local #395 until an unfortunate accident left him unable to continue working.  Before his accident he took great pride in being a Boy Scout Leader during his son’s time in scouts as well as coaching many of his sports teams.  Robert always enjoyed time outdoors; camping and fishing were favorite pastimes and he also made use of some his time growing flowers or vegetables that made it into many of the dishes he enjoyed cooking.  He loved music and was an avid Grateful Dead “Dead Head” fan and even traveled around to be able to see them in concert.   He loved to dance.  He was also one of the first “gamers”, being familiar with almost all of the different video gaming stations and most recently enjoying his Xbox.  He was also a Dungeons and Dragons Master.

He was proud to have been named Marguerite” Maggie” Ponda’s godfather and found his greatest joy when he was surrounded by his loved ones, especially his grandchildren.

His family and friends will miss his tender heart and ability to be a stinker all at the same time.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Gayle Ponda.

Surviving Robert is his son, Robert Ponda III, his daughter, Elizabeth Walker-Gratz, his siblings, Vincent (Michelle) Ponda, and Tracy Ponda-Cady.  He will also be greatly missed by his seven grandchildren as well has his four nephews, lots of cousins, aunts, and uncles.

In keeping with Robert’s wishes, cremation has taken place and his family will be remembering him privately.
