Obituary of Charlotte Jean Pompey

Please share a memory of Charlotte to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charlotte Jean Pompey, 79, of Niles, passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Spectrum Health Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph, following an illness. She was born February 4, 1942 in Mishawaka, Indiana, the daughter of Anthony Evans and Doris Dickerson. She was raised in Southwest Michigan by her parents, Marion and Doris (Dickerson) Mitchell. Charlotte was a 1960 graduate of Eau Claire High School. She married Wayne E. Pompey and although that union ended, Charlotte was blessed to have five children. While cooking and baking were a necessity in raising her family, Charlotte excelled at it and was known for her gift of hospitality. Her specialties of macaroni and cheese and her delectable deserts, including apple slices, pumpkin pie, chocolate de-lite and so many more, will all be fondly remembered and missed by those that had the pleasure of tasting them. She was a talented seamstress, making most of her own clothing for years. She enjoyed crafting and decorating and was a talented clarinetist. Her talents paled in comparison to the love she shared with her children and grandchildren. Her ability to weave a story and share silly catchphrases never failed to entertain them. Charlotte looked forward to long trips with her family by enjoying cruises, traveling to New Jersey, and cashing out at the Casino. She was an avid Michigan and Michigan State fan, cheering for her family’s alma maters. She was preceded in passing by her parents; a daughter-in-law, Pamela Pompey; brothers, DeWayne Mitchell and Daniel Mitchell. Charlotte is survived by her loving children, Anthony Pompey of Niles, Robert Pompey (Joseph Holstine) of New Jersey, Mark (Brenda) Pompey of Niles, Paula (Joshua) Brown of Niles and Barry Pompey (Nichole Kabara) of Niles, nine grandchildren; siblings, Myrna Richardson of Chicago, Pete Mitchell of Cassopolis, Patricia Lockridge of Schoolcraft, Madeline Mitchell of Dowagiac, Brenda Singleton of Cassopolis, Alric Evans of Kalamazoo, Tony Evans of Sadieville, Kentucky, Alan Evans of Elkhart, Mark Evans of Indianapolis and Suzanna Evans Hickman of Vandalia. She will also be greatly missed by a host of nieces, nephews and countless relatives and friends. A time of visitation will be held on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at Brown Funeral Home in Niles from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday, August 2, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home with committal services following at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Sodus Township.
