Obituary of Drew Carlton Markos
Please share a memory of Drew to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Drew C. Markos was reunited with his beloved wife Shirley on May 20th, 2021. He was born on March 1, 1942, the son of Nicholas and Rosemond (Drew) Markos. His father immigrated to the United States from Greece in 1915.His large family was raised in Battle Creek at 71 Iroquois, and later at 1491 West Michigan Ave. He attended Battle Creek public schools.
He always said the moment he met Shirley Anne Keyes that he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. They were married on March 17th, 1967, and shared 53 years together.
Over the years he was employed by the Battle Creek Wire Company, Clark Equipment, and Denso Manufacturing.
On the side, he worked with Art Nelson in construction learning the trade of carpentry. With that knowledge, he and Shirley built their home in Urbandale while growing and raising their family. While always striving to better provide for his family, they moved to their current home in Lakeview.
Drew enjoyed hunting for Morel mushrooms, spending time with family at their cabin in Manistee Michigan, cooking, watching FOX news, discussing politics and world events, going to the casino, and indulging in good food and a hot cup of coffee. He was passionate about declaring his unwavering support for Donald Trump.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and took great pride in his gardening and landscaping.
Whether or not you agreed with him, you had to appreciate his strong personality, work ethic, degree of motivation, strength of his beliefs, organization, and unforgettable sense of humor.
He is survived by daughters; Tonya (Steve) Frary-Nicholls, Michelle (Jeff) Grammer-Johnson, and Tammi (T.J.) Juarez. Together they were blessed with seven Grandchildren; Lindsey (Justin) Frary-Ritchie, Lisa Frary, Brian (Tonya) Grammer II, Brandi Grammer-Baldwin, Brooke Grammer, Diego Juarez, and Adella Juarez.
Seven great Grandchildren; Mikayla, Mason, Kolton, Bayleigh, Natalee, Bentley, and Parker.
Additional survivors include; brothers Henry Markos and Chris (Jane) Markos, sister; Becky (Dick) Warren, numerous special in-law’s, nieces and nephews and their families.
Drew was predeceased by his loving wife, Shirley, just 1 year and twenty-eight days prior to his passing. His separation from her absolutely devastated him and was more than his heart could bare. His physical health rapidly declined following her passing and his heart was truly broken both physically and emotionally. He was further predeceased by his daughter Lori, parents, brothers; Jamie (Marlene) Markos and Ronnie Markos, sisters; Marcia (David) Yaw, Nicolette (Joe) Visker, Zara Markos, Effie Thiede and half sisters; Evelyn Alexander and Violet Markos, dear friend John Blanton, brother-in-law Roger Drake, and sister-in-law Patsy Markos.
As a result of their kindness, Drew was able to remain in his home while maintaining quality of life, independence, and dignity and his daughters wish to extend their unending gratitude to the following; Shirley Dickens, Danny Rogers, Steve Nicholls, Jeff Johnson, Dick Warren, Jon Markos, Meals on Wheels and Tele-Transit.
Drew deeply valued his long-time friendships with Tom Augustine, Rich Mellen, Denny Johnson, Gary Prater, and Joan and Vern Herzing.
