Obituary of James Lee Smith

James Smith, 75, of Niles, passed away at his home on Friday, March 12, 2021. James was born on May 10, 1945, to the late Phyllis Alexander and adopted by Harlow E. & Julia Elizabeth (Culp) Smith. After graduating from Niles High school, James went on to get his associate's degree in Business from Lake Michigan College. James worked in communication at AT&T, enjoyed being a farmer, and volunteering for the Berrien County Sheriff Department. He loved to ride his Harley Davidson. In his free time he enjoyed photography, fishing, car racing, and spending time with his family. He enjoyed socializing with his dear friends’ #wolfticking. Music was such a big part of his life; he always had a song playing. James was known for grilling his world-famous ribs. On October 12, 1968, he wed Evelyn Wogatzke at a ceremony in Niles, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents; birth mother; and brother, Gene Monroe. James is survived by his wife, Evelyn; children, Ryan (Jill Turner) Smith of Mishawaka, Indiana, Carolyn (Pete Ramirez) Smith of Sacramento, California, and Aaron Smith of South Bend, Indiana; 4 grandchildren; siblings, Elizabeth (Tom) Earley of North Carolina, Cindy (Tom) Foley, Phyllis Spencer and Brian Monroe all of Washington; and many extended family members and close friends. Contributions in his memory may be made to his wife, Evelyn; for the establishment of an education fund for his grandchildren. Memorial service to celebrate James' life will be Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at 7:00 pm at New Apostolic Church 1451 Broadway Street, Niles, Michigan. The service will be live-streamed here and uploaded for viewing later. In keeping with the Covid-19 guidelines, our gathering is limited, the State of Michigan requires all in attendance to follow all guidelines including, social distancing, mandatory mask, and hand sanitizing.
