Obituary of Elaine Lucelle Smith

Elaine Lucelle Smith, 78, of Niles, passed away at Riveridge Manor in Niles on Thursday, January 28, 2021. Elaine was born on July 24, 1942, to the late Gerald and Evelyn (Herman) Smith in Niles. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Evelyn Herman. Elaine is survived by her children, Christopher Smith of Houghton, Michigan, David Smith of Berrien Springs, and John Smith of Berrien Springs. She is also survived by her brother Herman Smith of Buchanan. Elaine grew up on her parent's farm in Berrien Springs where she developed a lifelong love of horses. She graduated from Buchanan High School, Class of 1959. She went on to work with and show horses in Michigan and Indiana in her younger years. After the birth of her children, she would go on to work at Sheller-Globe and Bonnie Doon. While raising her three sons and working, Elaine attended SMC and LMC where she earned an Associate’s Degree in Business and Computer Science. She volunteered for a time at a horse farm that specialized in special needs therapy. After retiring, Elaine enjoyed working in her yard, needlepoint, crocheting, and knitting. A private funeral service will be held. She will be laid to rest next to her parents at Mission Hills Memorial Garden.
