Obituary of Eugene J Doerr

Gene Doerr, 72, of Niles, passed away on Friday, September 7, 2012 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, Indiana, following an illness. He was born on June 2, 1940 In Ottawa, Illinois to the late Joseph Anthony and Genevieve Virginia (Willey) Doerr. After high school Gene enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country proudly for over nine years. On December 29, 1989 Gene married Bethany Laing at a ceremony in Otisville, Michigan. He worked as a chemical plant supervisor for most of his career, however, Gene also thoroughly enjoyed working with horses as a blacksmith. In his earlier years he had several hobbies including woodworking, fishing, golf and horses. In more recent years Gene spent his time playing more golf, coin and stamp collecting, bird feeding and watching and more golf. His favorite pastime was bragging about his kids and grandkids. Gene is preceded in death by his parents and a sister and brother-in-law Rita & Werner Domitro. He is survived by his wife Bethany of Niles, four sons; Eugene "Gene" (Julie) Doerr Jr. of Woodstock, Illinois, Mark Hilton of Omaha, Nebraska, Eric (Angie) Williams of Niles, Gabriel (Karrie) Williams of Roscommon, Michigan, a daughter SueEllen (Mike) Patkunas of Palatine, Illinois, ten grandchildren and three sisters; Bunny (Mike) Roush of Ajo, Arizona, Karen (Mike) Collins of New Lenox, Illinois and Pat (Jay) Hopman of Powers Lake, Wisconsin. A memorial service to celebrate Gene's life will be held on Thursday, September 13th at 2:00p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 521 E. Main in Niles with a time of visitation beginning on Thursday at 12:30p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Gene's memory to St. Jude's Children's Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
