Obituary of Danny Albert Standish
Please share a memory of Danny to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dan A. Standish, 68, of Battle Creek, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2020, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, with his family by his side.
Dan was born on September 8, 1952, to the late Berwin “Bergie” and Dorothy (Boehm) Standish in Kalamazoo, Michigan and raised by his father and step-mother, Linda Standish. After his high school years he joined the United States Army where he served his country proudly during the Vietnam War. He continued his passion for veterans and was employed by the VA Medical Center for over 30 years and even in retirement assisted with veterans Freedom Hunts as well as other activities.
After being discharged Dan returned home and wed his beautiful bride, Virginia V. Johnson, on April 27, 1979 at a ceremony in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Dan took great pleasure in spending time outdoors; he was an avid fisherman who often took part in numerous Bass Fishing Tournaments. Each year he enjoyed trips to Manistee Lake with his parents and wife. When his daughter moved up north, he found an additional respite at her home in the woods. Dan also loved fall and winter time when again the great outdoors afforded him an occasion for turkey and deer hunting. During the spring or summer you could find Dan either getting the golf course ready for other golfers or enjoying a round of golf himself. He was a gifted artist; Dan painted and with his wood-crafting skills ensured all of his family was given a special piece at holiday times. Dan was a generous soul who always lent a helping hand but was also known for his “I can do it by myself” character. His family will miss his selflessness and sense of adventure.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Larry Standish.
Dan is survived by his wife, Virginia (Johnson) Standish; daughter, Sheri (Greg) Yesh of Grant, Michigan; Step-mother, Linda Standish of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Stacy (Mike) Humphreys of Battle Creek, Michigan, Sara (Scott) Lake of Norway, Michigan and Nolan (Jayne) Yesh of Grant, Michigan; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Ricky Standish of Mississippi, Cathy (Bruce) Murrey of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and many extended family members and close friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at New Hope Apostolic Church located at 6900 E Drive North, Battle Creek, Michigan at 1:00 pm with a visitation an hour prior to the service. He will be laid to rest at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens with Full Military Honors.
