Obituary of George G Wiars

George G. Wiars, 81, of Niles, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at The Chalet of Niles. He was born on November 25, 1938 to the late Jerry and Virginia (Moore) Wiars in Niles, Michigan. After graduating from Niles High School, class of 1956, George went on to enlist in the United States Army Reserve. After leaving the U.S. Army Reserves, George returned to Niles, working for over thirty-five years for National Standard. In May of 1968 he married the former Phillys Jones at a ceremony in Cassopolis. The couple separated many years’ later but remained close friends and loved each other until his last breath. George enjoyed time spent outdoors, hunting and fishing. Music has always been a passion for George. He thoroughly enjoyed folk music and was known for his great ability to play the guitar and banjo. George is survived by his former wife, Phillys Wiars of Niles; daughter, Lynn Wiars-Miller and her husband, John Konya of Wyoming, Michigan; a granddaughter, Elizabeth (Daniel) Summers of Lebanon, Oregon; three great-grandchildren Benjamin, Abigail and Timothy as well as two bonus grandchildren, Drew and Addi Konya. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday, March 19, 2020, at Mission Hills Memorial Chapel in Niles with a time of visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. An interment will follow at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions in his memory may be directed to The Chalet of Niles 911 S. Third Street, Niles, Michigan 49120.
