Aunt Lil unconditionally accepted my mom, Shelby Jean Snider, my brother Jon, sister Julie and myself when we moved to La Porte in 1972. Although our time spent there being a part of the extended family of new cousins (Andy and Danny, along with our Uncle Bud’s kids) was only a year, it left an indelible impression upon us Snider kids. We were accepted and acknowledged in such a meaningful way. Uncle Bud wanted to help a struggling single mother raising three kids from a housing project in Canton, IL. That year in La Porte raised our sense of worth and self-esteem immensely. At the time to us kids, Aunt Lil’s acceptance of us coming into her life seemed natural. Looking back, it was extraordinarily kind and loving for a recently widowed woman who had just remarried to a man with 5 with kids and adjusting to a newly blended family. And then the four Snider misfits move up from Illinois. Lol Such an amazing act of kindness by my Uncle Bud. But in many ways, even more impressive was Aunt Lil’s love. Never were we made to feel like we were an intrusion. We simply were accepted and lovingly acknowledged by this sweet lady. We will never forget and be forever grateful of our Aunt Lil. Jim Snider
