Please share a memory of Sherrie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sherrie A. Bankston, 71, of Dowagiac, went home to glory on Saturday, January 25, 2020, at Lakeland Hospital in Niles. Sherrie was born on November 8, 1948, to the late Oakley D. and Marion J (Plant) Ritter in South Bend, Indiana. Her father was a military man, and she learned a lot of her discipline and devotion from him. She learned how to keep a home and be a wonderful mom from her mother. She graduated from Adams High School, and at a very young age, on March 19, 1971, she married Dean Dill. Together they had two sons, Nicholas and Bryan. Even though the marriage did not last, they were able to eventually develop a friendship. Sherrie’s greatest joy was her family, she loved her boys unconditionally. And she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She taught her boys how to drive, run fence lines, and anything else she thought they needed to be great husbands and fathers. Sherrie gained an extended family when she began attending the Apostolic Lighthouse church with her close friend Joanne. She eventually began working at the Lighthouse Christian Childcare Center. Through the twelve years that she worked there she rocked many a new born, fed hundreds of infants and toddlers, and soothed many booboos. Sherrie eventually went on to be the beloved “mom” at the church’s recovery home, Hope’s Door. She had a love for her church and church family that went above and beyond the usual. She was a mom, an aunt and a true friend to all. She was preceded in death by her parents. Sherrie is survived by her sons, Nick (Brenda) Dill of Dowagiac; Bryan (Charlotte) Dill of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, seven grandchildren, Alana Anne, Krista, Ethan, Collin, Garrett (Chelsea), Gabby (Jake), and Gretchen (Jake); two great-grandchildren; her sister, Nancy (Tom) Richards of Henderson, Nevada; along with a host of extended family. Funeral services will be held at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, at the Apostolic Lighthouse Church, 30402 M-62 West, Dowagiac. A time of visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, on Thursday at 10:00 AM. Memorial contributions in her memory may be directed to her beloved church, Apostolic Lighthouse or to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.
