Obituary of David Wilbur Smith

David W. Smith, 73, of Niles, passed away peacefully at Cass County Medical Care Facility on Saturday, September 15, 2018.

Dave was born on January 28, 1945, to the late Ross and Mildred (Cooper) Smith in Litchfield, Michigan.  The family later moved to Niles where Dave graduated from Niles High School, class of 1963.  Dave went on to enlist in the United States Air Force where he proudly served from 1963 until 1967.  On August 7, 1971, he wed Mary M. Hemphill at a ceremony in Niles and the two had one son. After returning home from his military service Dave went into the printing business.  He became the head pressman for Niles Daily Star and later moved to Niles Printing.  He found his career at Mossberg Printing where he remained for over 20 years. Dave loved watching NASCAR, from his favorite spot on the couch, where he cheered on Ryan Newman and also enjoyed watching old western movies.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Smith; sister, Norma Jean Donaldson; and brothers, Doug Smith, Kenny Smith, and Duane Smith.

Dave is survived by his son, Darren (Katy) Smith of Buchanan; brother, Fred (Janet) Smith of Niles; and many extended family members and close friends.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate Dave’s life will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., with a time of visitation one hour prior at Brown Funeral Home, Niles.
