Obituary of Donald Richard Hover

Donald R. Hover, 83, of Dowagiac, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, of natural causes.

On October 17, 1934 Don was born in Niles to the late Nelson and Virginia (Pine) Hover.

Don graduated from Niles High School, class of 1952. He attended Michigan State University. Don served his country proudly in the U.S. Army from 1956 until 1958. He worked for his family business, Hover Trucking, until 1978. He owned and operated Lawton Antique Mall. He was a member of St. Hedwig Church in South Bend. Don enjoyed time spent antiquing, cooking, growing flowers and gardening; he filled many hours working on puzzles. Don also enjoyed the quiet times in life, long car rides, driving a horse and buggy or a sleigh through the snow. Don mostly loved the time he spent with family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Bobby Shaffer.

Don is survived by a sister, Donna (Richard) Shaffer of Berrien Center; a brother, Gregory (Diane) Hover of Niles; nephews, Scott (Janet) Shaffer of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, Doug Shaffer of Niles, Adam (Melissa) Hover of Niles and Brad (Nichole) Hover of Dowagiac; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

In keeping with Don’s wishes, his family held a private funeral and an interment at Sumnerville Cemetery.  An open house celebration of Don’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 34 Sycamore Street, Niles.
