Obituary of James Bergerson

James Bergerson, 73, of Niles, passed away at Memorial Hospital in South Bend on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, following a brief illness. He was born on January 6, 1944 in Elkhart, Indiana to the late Russel and Evelyn (Wenker) Bergerson. Jim graduated Cassopolis High School in 1963 and enlisted in 1965 in the U.S. Air Force. He served his country proudly, being honorably discharged as a sergeant, during Vietnam. On June 26, 1971 Jim married Jacqueline Smith at a ceremony in Niles, Michigan. He attended Greer Technical School in Chicago and became a talented auto-mechanic. Jim was employed and spent his career at Springsteen's and then Steinman's Shell, both in Dowagiac. He was a proud American and was a lifetime member of the National Legionnaires. Jim gave of himself in many capacities including; a volunteer fireman with the Pokagon Township Fire Department for over twenty years, where he achieved the rank of Captain, he volunteered at Fireman's Park for over twenty years, a current member of the Howard Township Board since 2004 and a member of the Portage Prairie United Methodist Church. Jim thoroughly enjoyed watching and listening to classic country westerns. He also was fond of old war movies, looking at old cars and reading mystery and western books. Jim also enjoyed time outdoors including; gardening, camping and fishing. His greatest love was that for his family, especially his grandchildren. Jim is survived by his wife of forty-six years, Jacki Bergerson of Niles, three daughters; Angela (Bryon) Scoggin of Buchanan, Cheryl (Michael) Morgan of Niles and Christine (Peter) Smith of Niles, thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He will also be remembered by his brother, Jerold (Renee) Bergerson of Elkhart and countless friends and cousins. A time of visitation will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2017 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Brown Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 25, 2017 at 11:00 am with Pastor Tom Fox officiating. The family will gather at Mission Hills for a private interment. Memorial contributions may be made in Jim's memory to the Wounded Warrior's Project.
