Obituary of Gilbert Helwig

Gilbert J. Helwig, 90, of Niles, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, November 21, 2014. Gilbert was born on December 8, 1923 to the late John and Isabelle Helwig in Chicago, Illinois. After school Gilbert joined the United States Army where he faithfully served his country and fought during the Battle of the Bulge during World War II where he was a prisoner of war (P.O.W.) and held for several months until April of 1944 when he was liberated. After returning from the service Gilbert went on to become a police officer. He worked in Lansing, Illinois as an officer from 1954 until he retired in 1978 as a Captain. Gilbert was an avid golfer and went out regularly well in to his 80s. He also enjoyed working in his yard and spending time outdoors but what he loved most was being a companion to his wife of 65 years, a father to his two daughters and a grandfather to his two grandchildren. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lucille Helwig and two brothers Howard and Richard Helwig. He is survived by his two daughters Pamela Helwig of Niles and Cynthia Waugaman of Niles and two grandchildren Dean Waugaman of Worcester, Massachusetts and Wendy Waugaman of Niles. A time of visitation will be held on Monday, November 24, 2014 at Mission Hills Memorial Chapel from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. with funeral services beginning at 1:00 p.m.
