Obituary of Carney G. Long
Please share a memory of Carney to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Carney G. Long, 91, of Niles passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at his home with his family by his side.
Carney was born on October 3, 1923 to the late Francis and Florilla (Hefner) Long in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
He served his country courageously in the US Army during WW II. Carney stormed the beaches of Normandy and earned a Bronze Star in the Battle of the Bulge. He took great pride in being a soldier and felt it a great honor to be an Army veteran. Shortly after his discharge he courted and married the love of his life Marie Killarney on June 28, 1947 at a ceremony in Niles.
Carney enjoyed camping, hunting, archery, and target shooting. He was an avid Notre Dame fan, Nascar enthusiast and outdoorsman; other pastimes Carney relished included bowling, playing pool, playing cards and most importantly spending time with family and friends. Carney made friends easily and no one walked away a stranger. He was a man of faith and a member of St. Mark Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Marie, his brother Cody Long, and his three sisters; Freida Kettlehut, Velma Sears, and Irma Hentsch.
Surviving Carney are his four sons; John (Lynn) Long of Roswell, Georgia, Gerald (Tammy) Long of Niles, Joe (Debbie) Long of Niles, and Randy (Kim) Long of Mishawaka; two daughters Carol (Dan) Smothermon of Niles and Kathy Long of Cornelius, North Carolina. He will also be missed by his sixteen grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and his brother-in-law and lifelong friend Howard (Shirley) Killarney of Niles.
Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honor of Carney may do so to Hospice at Home; 4025 Health Park Lane, St. Joseph, Michigan 49085.
