Obituary of Rodney Akey

Rodney "Rod" James Akey, 51, of Niles passed away on Monday, August 22, 2016 at his home, after a lengthy and courageous fight with kidney failure. He was born on August 17, 1965 to Jerry Lee and Karol Ann (Freeze) Akey in Niles, Michigan. Rod is preceded in death by his father, Jerry Akey. He is survived by his daughter, Kristen Akey; mother, Karol Akey; brother, Scott Akey; sisters, Debra and Stephanie Akey; girlfriend of 16 years, Jaymie L. Marlin and a host of family and friends. He enjoyed everything about fishing; in fact he was able to enjoy a morning of trout fishing on the day he passed. Rod held a Michigan State record for a flat-head catfish that he caught in 2012 that weighed 49.8lbs. and enjoyed deer hunting, collecting guns and bows; but everyone who knew "Hammer," knew him best for his stories. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in memory of Rod, may do so to; his daughter Kristen Akey or Jaymie Marlin. A time of visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 30th, 2016 at 10 O'clock in the Morning at Brown Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held following the visitation at 11 O'clock in the Morning.
