John E. Ottinger, 79, of Niles, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at South Bend Hospice House, following an illness.
He was born on October 20, 1937 in Hartford, Michigan to the late George O. and Pauline M. (Osborne) Ottinger.
John spent his younger years working the family farm in Decatur. He worked for many years in the fiberglass truck cap industry, where he was a supervisor. John enjoyed quiet time fishing, bowling and playing pool. He also enjoyed carpentry work as well as tinkering on cars.
On June 21, 1958 in South Bend, Indiana he married Nancy Lee Margaret Klade with whom he celebrated over fifty-seven years together.
He is survived by his children, Debora (& Donald) Strugar of Niles, John (& Anne) Ottinger of Niles, and Douglas (& Teri) Ottinger of South Bend; grandchildren; James (& Renee) Hamilton, Melissa (& Dustin) Brabank, and Matthew Ottinger; great-grandchildren, Keristen, Austen, and Hailey, a great-great-granddaughter, Sophia; a brother, Robert (Kim) Ottinger of Dowagiac, and two sisters, Flossie Huff and Rosemary Ottinger, both of Dowagiac; several nieces and nephews.
The family of John Ottinger will be gathering on Friday, December 23, 2016 from 4:00p.m. until 7:00p.m to honor his life and share memories at the Ontario Place park office at 2006 Ontario Road, Lot 147, in Niles. Together with his wife Nancy, they will be laid to rest at Silverbrook Cemetery.
