Obituary of LeRoy Barkmann

LeRoy Barkmann, 70, of Niles, passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. LeRoy was born on June 4, 1946, to the late Paul and Mary (Voit) Barkmann in Dowagiac, Michigan. After high school, LeRoy immediately went to work at Kawneer. On June 26, 1965, LeRoy wed the love of his life, Starr Nelson, at a ceremony in Buchanan. Together the two had three children. After Kawneer closed LeRoy went to work for AM General where he retired after 30 years. LeRoy was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. If you couldn't find him at the family property you knew he would be enjoying himself at the Edwardsburg Conservation Club. He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife of 51 years, Starr; children, Dawn (Adam) Shefsick, Amy (Brian) Lawson, and Rodney Barkmann, all of Niles; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Grace (Jim) Cronin of Buchanan and Sally (Mike) Galaske of Niles; and many extended family and close friends. Funeral service to honor LeRoy's life will be held on Monday, January 30, 2017, at First Church of Christ Christian located at 2240 Yankee Street in Niles beginning at 10:30 a.m. with a time of visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens.
