Obituary of Ron Newsom

Ronnie L. Newsom, 75, of Niles, passed away at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center on Friday, April 28, 2017. Ron was born on December 14, 1941, to the late Delvin J. and Geraldine L. (McAlexander) Newsom. After graduating from high school, Ron went on to serve his country proudly in the U.S. Army, 101st Airborne. In 1964 Ron Married Loretta Sciba and to that twenty year union, four children were born. He worked for over fifteen years at Sunnyside Beverages and several years at Howard Delivery Service. Ron went back to trade school and received his certification to be an electrician. He worked as an electrician at Notre Dame for over fifteen years before retiring in 2004. Ron being unable to be idle decided to return to work and was employed at Aluminum Metal, as a truck driver, in Elkhart for five years. On November 14, 1987, Ron married Violet R. Grove at a ceremony in South Bend. Ron was an active member of the Buchanan American Legion Post #51, where he served in their military honors team as well as enjoyed riding his bike with them. He was also a member of the Teamsters Local 364 in South Bend. Ron was a member of AA and was proud of his accomplishment of twenty two years of sobriety. He looked forward to playing cards with friends, gardening, fishing, cooking and was an excellent baker. He also enjoyed time on his Pontoon and his Trike. He owned several antique cars throughout his lifetime. Ron was an avid Notre Dame fan and football season ticket holder. Ron found time with family and friends to be what he enjoyed the most. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Billy and Johnny Alan Newsom and a step-son-in-law Greg Miinch. Ron is survived by his wife, Violet Newsom of Niles, his children; Jeffrey (Cynthia) Newsom of Osceola, Cynthia (Joe)Mosier of Bristol, Indiana, Amy (Walter) Grimes of Gray, Georgia and Eric (Lucienne) Newsom of Austin, Texas, Violets children; Penny (Fred) Mohler of Granger, Pam (Jim) Hertel of Granger, Rick Jr. (Tammy) Penrod of Mishawaka and Paula Miinch of Niles. He is also survived by nineteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren and two nieces, Sara Battles and Bethany Holmgren, both of South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made in Ron's memory to American Legion Post 51, 403 E. Front Street, Buchanan, Michigan, 49107. A time of visitation will be held on Friday, May 5, 2017 at Brown Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home and will conclude with the Full Military Honors by the United States Army Honor Guard and American Legion Post #51 of Buchanan, Michigan.
