Joseph R. VanMeter, 84, of Niles passed away at his residence on Friday October 12, 2007, with his family by his side.
He was born on May 23, 1923 in South Bend, Indiana to the late John E. and Helen (Rafter) VanMeter.
Joe was a World War II Army veteran. On September 13, 1946 he married the love of his life Laura Leeke at a ceremony in South Bend, Indiana. He was a former Tool and Die Maker and retired from Granger Machine and Tool in Granger, Indiana. Joe's hobbies included being a hand craftsman, bowling on local leagues for many years and coaching for the Niles F.O.P. Little League Baseball for over 25 years.
He is survived by his wife of sixty one years Laura VanMeter of Niles, three sons; Victor VanMeter of Los Angeles, California, Lester (Gwen) VanMeter of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Roger (Ruth) VanMeter of Decatur, Michigan, a daughter Wanda (Keith) Richardson of Pekin, Illinois, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In keeping with Joe's wishes, a private graveside service will be held at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens.
