Obituary of Leona Akey

Leona Grace (Huttenstine) Akey March 6, 1917 November 23, 2007 Leona Grace Akey, 90, of Pokagon Highway in Niles, passed away on Friday, November 23, 2007 at her home with her family by her side. Leona was born on March 6, 1917 to the late Erastus and Nellie May (Dimmit) Huttenstine in Mottville Township, Michigan. She was one of 7 children in the Huttenstine household. After graduating high school Leona wed the love of her life, Donald Akey, at a ceremony on January 28, 1939 in Vicksburg, Michigan. Together they had 3 wonderful sons. Leona was a lifetime member of the Sumnerville Baptist Bible Church in Niles. She taught Bible School there for over 50 years. When Leona wasn't in church she could always be found outside in her garden. She loved spending time with her flowers and crops. She was known to keep more types of flowers than she could keep track of, including the African flowers that were in every room in her house. Along with growing her flowers were her crops, and along with growing crops comes canning, and then follows an excellent cook. She cooked for every occasion, even if it was just a reason to spend more time with her family. Her apple pie was especially delicious. Her grandchildren were her joy, she always loved spending time with them. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Don, son Robert Akey, Brothers Howard, Harold and Bill Huttenstine and sisters Eva Huttenstine, Irene Hall and Rose Weaver. Leona is survived by her children James (Brenda) Akey of Niles and Jerry (Karol) Akey of Niles, 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Niles from 5-8 pm. Leona's funeral will be held at her beloved church, Sumnerville Baptist Bible Church, on Thursday, November 29, 2007 at 11:00 pm. Pastor Dan Greggor will be officiating. Leona will then be interred at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Niles.
