Obituary of Richard Donald Reist

Richard D. Reist, 88, of Buchanan, passed away at Lakeland Hospital in Niles on Thursday, October 1, 2020, with his family by his side. Richard, or “Buddy” or “Shorty” as many of his friends knew him was born on November 29, 1931, to the late Raymond Reist and Hazel Leeper in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He worked at White’s Bowling Alley for a period of time before beginning his career with the City of Buchanan. Buddy worked doing lawn maintenance for the entire city for 25 years before he retired. Buddy married his wife who soon after passed away. He spent most of his free time at home; it is where he was most comfortable. He could usually be found in his rocking chair, drinking a cup of coffee, watching an old western movie, eating a Dove chocolate bar or a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup; those were his favorite times. In 2017 Buddy moved in with his great-nephew, David Beadle, who was happy to keep the coffee flowing and the westerns on TV. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and siblings, Joyce, Josephine, Suzy, Dale, Fern, Alford, and Mary. Buddy is survived by his sister, Ardith McAdams of Arkansas, and several extended family members. Graveside services will be held at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, October 6, 2020.
